"I am a scholar of life. Every night before I got to sleep, I analyze every detail of what I did that day. I evaluate things and people, which helps me avoid mistakes. I don't sit in the corner waiting for death: death has to pursue me. I'm going strong. I hope to reach 100 and ask for an extension, just like my grandmother did."
-- Compay Segundo in a 2000 interview. He died July 15 at the age of 95.

Show Notes: It was a sad week for world music fans, and especially for Cubans. Tuesday marked the passing of Compay Segundo (born Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz) and Wednesday we lost salsa diva Celia Cruz. Also, master valiha player Sylvestre Randafison from Madagascar (who was an artist in residence at the University of Washington in the early 1990s) passed on this week. On the positive side, today is the 85th birthday of Nelson Mandela, still an outspoken advocate of justice and peace.

# Our cover song of the week was a hiphop adaptation of Compay Segundo's famous "Chan Chan" by the Paris-based Cuban group Orishas.
