Prompted by new releases by Fanfare Ciocarlia, Romashka, and other Roma (Gypsy) groups, today's show featured the wide ranging sounds and influences of this far-flung nation. From brass bands to fiddles and accordions, this sweet-sad-festive music speaks to the soul. Read Michal Shapiro's detailed Rootsworld article on Gypsy music. For more Roma downloads and samples, check out Mikkel Hornnes's Gypsy Music page.

Ferus Mustafov is a leading proponent of Gypsy wedding music in Macedonia, a style of music which is propelled by electric bass and guitar, drums, keyboards and accordion, all competing to reach ever more dizzying speeds. A saxophonist and clarinetist, Mustafov comes from a traditional Gypsy music family. Indeed his father was the first to incorporate the saxophone into the wedding music format. Since the early 1970s he has released a vast discography (generally cassette only).
