"The History of Jamaican Music: From Folk to Mento" (8:35) from jamaicans.com

"Woman's Smarter" (.mov format) by The Jolly Boys

The perfect sounds for mid-summer, mento and calypso music are fun, but often not without a biting social-political subtext. We heard a variety of Caribbean calypso and Jamaican mento, including an odd offering by Maya Angelou from her 1956 album Miss Calypso. Don't look so surprised - even Louis Farrakhan tried his hand at calypso (hear some of his songs here), so strong was its hypnotic musical pull. Perhaps you feel a calypso tune coming on yourself?
