The Garifuna (or Garifune) culture of Central America is not well known, but emerging musicians are changing that. An Afro-Caribbean mix of the cultures of Carib Indians and shipwrecked Nigerian slaves, they were forced from the island of St. Vincent by the British colonial powers, and settled on the Atlantic coasts of Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize. Today the music and culture of the people, properly called Garinagu, are experiencing a comeback, reflected in the releases of record labels like Stonetree Records of Belize.

For more on the history of the Garinagu, see this page or garifuna.com. And for more on Garifuna/Paranda/Punta Rock music, check on Michael Stone's article on Rootsworld.com.

See Spin the Globe's CD Reviews for reviews and info on new releases. Most of the music played on Spin the Globe is available on CD at cdRoots.com or CD Universe or via mp3 downloads at the Calabash.
