Garifuna (or Garifune) culture of Central America is not well
known, but emerging musicians are changing that. An Afro-Caribbean
of the cultures of Carib Indians and shipwrecked Nigerian slaves,
they were forced from the island of St. Vincent by the British
colonial powers, and settled on the Atlantic coasts of Nicaragua,
Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize. Today the music and culture
of the people, properly called Garinagu, are experiencing a
comeback, reflected in the releases of record labels like Stonetree
Records of Belize.
