Home of Mbira musician Garikayi Tirikoti Destroyed
Our friends at Limitless Sky Records have been making plans for a 2006 USA tour by great Mbira musician Garikayi Tirikoti. Now replacing that pleasant anticipation comes news that the Zimbabwean government has destroyed the home of Garikayi's family, who are now spending a winter without shelter. Limitless Sky is rallying people to help the family, though prayer, donations, and purchases of their products, the proceeds of which will aid the family. Homeland Security Bans Foreign Music

Great - first they deny performance visas to musicians from Cuba, Africa, and elsewhere, now the US government has a plan to limit music from countries they don't like, all in the name of anti-terrorism. The program is called the Homeland-Overseas Music Enterprise (HOME), and you can read the press release here.

International Songwriters Competition
The 2005 winners have been announced, and the world music category winner is Modeste (UK) for the song "Agapi Mou." You can download mp3s or hear many songs online.

Northwest Worldlife Festival 2004
You might remember it as the Northwest Folklife Festival (May 28-31), but looking through this year's lineup - and the special emphasis on the Horn of Africa - it's clear that the folk veneer hides an embarassment of world music riches. Taiko, Tango, Turkish, Brazilian, Balkan, Bosnian, Hawaiian, Sudanese, Korean ... the list seems endless! Some highlights include Spin the Globe favorites Maya Soleil, Lora Chiorah-Dye, Ibrahima Camara, Children of the Revolution, Samba Olywa, and lots of groups we look forward to discovering for the first time.
